CrankTrace is a wireless diagnostic and display interface for older Yamaha outboard engines. The CrankTrace Gateway, a small module that plugs into your engine's diagnostic connector, bridges the engine's onboard data to any modern device — smartphone, tablet, or computer — without proprietary displays or dealership software.
Whether you're running offshore, idling in the bay, or troubleshooting at the dock, CrankTrace gives you a live view of how your engine is running. Temperature, fuel consumption, hours, fault codes — surfaced clearly, in real time, on whatever screen is closest.
Designed for boat owners who like to stay on top of their equipment. No subscription and no cloud dependency — your engine data stays with you.

Highlights
Connectivity
Twin engines: a Gateway on each engine, linked wirelessly — your phone connects once and sees both.
Your phone joins the Gateway's own WiFi — no router, internet, or cell signal needed. The simplest setup, and ideal offshore. Your phone stays offline while connected this way.
Join the Gateway to your boat's WiFi or Starlink once, and your phone keeps its internet connection while you monitor your engines.
Both modes support single and twin engines, and the app picks the right one automatically.

FAQ
The CrankTrace Gateway — a small module that plugs into your engine's diagnostic connector — reads data from the engine's computer and sends it wirelessly to your phone, tablet, or PC. You see live engine data in real time — RPM, temperatures, battery voltage, engine hours, oil and water-in-fuel status — plus fault codes and guided component tests.
CrankTrace is designed for Yamaha EFI four-stroke and HPDI two-stroke outboards from roughly 1999 to 2012 that have Yamaha's 3-pin diagnostic connector — from the F30 through the V6 and V8 four-strokes, plus the HPDI V6 family. Newer CAN-bus engines (such as VMAX SHO and 2013-and-later digital-control models) and carbureted engines aren't supported. We're testing across the engine family now and will publish a full list of supported engines closer to launch. Not sure about yours? Email [email protected].
Yes. CrankTrace reads the standard Yamaha fault codes stored by your engine's computer and shows them as they happen, with a plain-English description of each. We're adding more detail on what each code means and its common causes — a helpful starting point, not a substitute for a qualified marine mechanic.
CrankTrace displays the same live engine data and runs the same kinds of diagnostic tests found in common Yamaha diagnostic tools — wirelessly, from the device you already carry, with no laptop or special cable. It's built for owners doing their own checks and troubleshooting; it doesn't reprogram or modify your engine.
Yes. Each engine gets its own Gateway, and the two link together so your phone connects once and shows both engines side by side in real time, with a detailed diagnostics view for each. Component tests run on one engine at a time.
No. Your phone can connect directly to the Gateway's own WiFi with no router, internet, or cell signal. If you have boat WiFi or Starlink, the Gateway can join that network instead so your phone keeps its internet connection.
The Gateway hardware is complete and the app is nearing beta. The beta is opening soon, with launch targeted for late 2026 / early 2027. Use the Join the Beta button to request a spot.
We're looking for boat owners to help us test CrankTrace across more of the Yamaha engine family. If you run one of these (roughly 1999–2012 models), we'd especially like to hear from you:
Tell us your engine model and year, and we'll be in touch as beta spots open.
